Emergency declared in connection to ice jam potential

Gov. Dave Heineman has declared a state of emergency due to the potential for ice jam-related flooding along the lower Platte River and its tributaries.
 
The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will work with state and federal partners to address excessive ice on the Platte River.

BC Relay For Life kickoff February 11

Butler County walkers will go overnight to fight cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Butler County this summer on Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 5.

In an effort to get the planning and celebration started, a Kick Off dinner is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. at Butler County Senior Services, 592 D Street, David City.

Dinner is compliments of Oak Creek Catering. Anyone interested in finding more out about Relay For Life is welcome!

$8,400 raised to help with heat bills

At least it wasn't windy.

The temperature hovered around 7 degrees Thursday night as David City Middle School students got off school buses on the north and south sides of town and started their Walk for Warmth.

Teams of two students were accompanied by adults, either one of their parents or an employee of Black Hills Energy. At each house, the walkers felt the welcome blast of warm air as residents opened their doors and made a donation.

Ballots have been sent to registered voters in David City for the special election which will determine whether the city continues to operate a police department.

The Banner-Press has learned that some voters did not receive their ballots because of address issues on their voter registration.

Any David City registered voters who did not receive a ballot in the mail should call or visit the County Clerk's Office to get answers to questions and resolve any addressing issues.

Decision time for incumbents comes Feb. 16

Rising City to consider DC, Shelby merger proposals

Rising City School Board to decide future next month


The telltale signs of the end are clear for Rising City Public Schools.
Last year the School Board began entertaining proposals to merge with either David City or Shelby.

Over the summer, Superintendent Michael Derr visited David City and launched an effort to make a merger happen. Committees from the two schools met, but meetings did not result in a solid proposal.

Mayor: Pay schedules, negativity are obstacles to PD "rehab"


By Feb. 9, David City voters will have decided whether the city should keep operating a police department or seek other means, including a proposed contract with the county.
A vote to keep the department will not make the city's police troubles go away, Mayor Dana Trowbridge said on Monday.

He said two areas of concern could prevent the "very needed rehabilitation of an inefficient and ineffective Police Department."

PD supporter says city could re-hire officers, chief

Last April, Carol Brehm told the City Council that she was concerned that the sale of the police station might mean the end of the David City Police Department.

She said the Council had the power to close the department, but that kind of move should not happen without a vote of the local residents.

Book details life of Ruth Etting

David City artist Ruth Nichols got some good news this month. The long awaited book about Ruth Etting, for whom Nichols was named, is in print.

In Ruth Etting: America's Forgotten Sweetheart, authors Kenneth Irwin and Charles O. Lloyd provide the first full-length biography of Ruth Etting, who was among the most important performers of the early 20th century.

Special election ballots arriving in mail

Registered voters in David City have begun to receive their mail-in ballots to vote in the city's special election that will determine the future of the David City Police Department.

This is an election by mail; therefore, no polling places will be open for voting. The official date of the election is Tuesday, February 9, 2010.
