David City earns 'project ready' status from NPPD

Nebraska Public Power District recently honored the city of David City with an award for its 2008 economic development efforts in the category of "prospect ready" community.

NPPD Economic Development Consultant Mary Plettner presented the award to Mayor Dana Trowbridge, City Administrator Joe Johnson and Butler County Development Director Willow Holoubek.

The award for prospect ready community recognizes work completed in five areas to improve competitiveness for business and industrial development.

Fargo Assembly lays off 34 employees

When manufacturers of ambulances, lawn mowers and farm equipment slow down their production for a tough economy, the effects hit the builders of parts and components as well.

That's the conclusion drawn as a second round of layoffs has hit one of David City's largest manufacturers.

The Nebraska Department of Labor reported Monday that 34 employees at Fargo Assembly were among those who were put out of work from closures and layoffs in March.

Shelby girls 14th at Doane Invite

The Shelby girls track team placed 14th at the Doane Invite Thursday.

The girls scored six points in the Class D division of the season-opening meet.
Prague won the team title with 76 points. Pawnee City was second with 51.5 points.

Freshman DeAnna Cyza placed fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 30.02 seconds and fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:07.5.

Freshman Maddie Scow placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 29'10".

The Huskies were shorthanded, missing sophomore sprinter Lindsay Coffin at the meet.

DC boys track open season at Doane meet

The David City boys track team received an initial dose of how challenging life in Class B can be.

The Scouts tied for 16th place in the Class B division of the Doane College Invite.

Blair won the team title with 50 points, four more than York and eight more than Fairbury.

David City scored six points at the meet.

Sophomore Seth Behrens placed fourth in the triple jump, going 39'.

The 1,600-meter relay team placed fifth in a time of 3:55.23.

Is Fertilizing Pastures Worth the Expense?

Spring is approaching and cool-season grass pastures soon will green-up.

We should begin thinking about fertilizing. In this column, let's see if it is worth the expense.

Grass growth is stimulated by nitrogen fertilizer just like other crops.

With nitrogen fertilizer costing well over 50 cents per pound this spring, though, does it pay to fertilize pasture?

Leading Locally met at the Library for the seventh session on March 5.  Our program for this month was "Entrepreneurial Leadership & Innovation."

Connie Reimers-Hild, with UNL-Extension of Nebraska City's Kimmel Education & Research Center, was our presenter.
Gwen Hein was the facilitator for this month. We were split into two groups to do an icebreaker. We had to come up with as many words or thoughts that we could to describe "Entrepreneurial Leadership."

COLUMBUS - Brad and Michele (Brandl) Smith of Bellwood are the parents of a daughter, Taylor Lynn, born April 19, 2009, at Columbus Community Hospital. She weighed 5 pounds 13 ounces.

Grandparents are Tom and Sharon Brandl of Monroe and Ken and Sherrill Smith of David City.

Great-grandparents are Darlene Brandl of Columbus and Earl Widhalm of Humphrey.

Consider various factors when determining grain bin rental rates

Renting out on-farm grain bins is a smart move for farmers or acreage owners who don't wish to see empty grain bins stand idle.

However, there are various factors to consider when setting rental rates. Taking these factors seriously will make for a fair agreement that satisfies both  owner and renter.  
I get a few calls on this topic each year, so I thought this information would be good to pass on.

 Robert Rathjen


CARSON CITY, Nev. - Robert "Bob" R. Rathjen, 72, of Carson City, Nev., formerly of Butler County, died Monday, March 16, 2009.

Mr. Rathjen was born Aug. 18, 1936, at Ulysses to Adolf and Marie (Jankey) Rathjen.

He was retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years and also a retired postman at the David City Post Office. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

East Butler overcomes finance setback on Dwight Elementary project

Work is proceeding on the East Butler Public Schools' new Dwight Elementary building despite the school board going into emergency mode to keep financing in place for the project.

Superintendent Jim Koontz said that Ameritas of Lincoln was contracted to sell the bonds for the $1.2 million school cost after the original finance company, Bay Stone Financial Corporation of Topeka, Kan., backed out in early February.
