When you receive your "straw ballot" in the mail, your vote supporting the Rising City Public School district merger with David City Public Schools is clearly the best long-term educational and financially stable opportunity for the patrons of Rising City School District.

Committee to study former garden center, city office space

Two weeks after the citizens spoke strongly in favor of keeping the David City Police Department, the City Council is taking steps to find a station site and rebuild the police staff.
A special City Council meeting was held Monday night. The meeting was called on Feb. 17, too late for publication in last week's newspaper.

County Planning Commission sets March 2 hearing

The Butler County Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. on March 2 in the district courtroom.
The meeting will be the first held by the commission since May 19. Before the May meeting, the comission had received a copy of a proposed comprehensive plan. Approval of the minutes from May 19 and discussion of the plan are on the agenda.

Class D Consolation wrapup

Aquinas and East Butler wrestlers who entered the consolation round of the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships on Friday afternoon were eliminated.

Sophomore Cody Florian of East Butler had a major decision, 10-2 over Walter Flint of Elwood to start the 119 lb bracket, but he was unable to continue thanks to Tanner Teel of Southwest, who pinned Florian in 3:42.

In the 125 lb class, Trent Eller of Aquinas escaped with a 4-2 overtime decision over Grant Nordby of Stanton. In the second round, he lost 12-2 to Tell Deatrich of Medince Valley.

East Butler's Ratkovec injured in quarterfinals

Tanner Ratkovec wanted to wrestle in the Class D 135 lb. semi finals Friday night at the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships but the trainers said no.

Ratkovec suffered a stretched ligament in his neck Thursday night, according to doctors at the Creighton University Medical Center. Tests revealed that he did not suffer more serious injuries to his neck, his father Larry Ratkovec said.

Aquinas' Comte moves on to semis

Aquinas senior Alex Comte won a 4-0 decision in the 171 lb. class over Jordan Nelson of Winside to advance to the semi finals of the Class D State Wrestling Championship. Comte fended off Nelsons attempts at a throw through the last half of the third period.  Comte, 31-7, pinned Heath Shannon of Franklin in the first round. The semi finals begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Qwest Center in Omaha.

Senior Brian Prigge lost his quarterfinal match to Zachary Brokaw, a junior from Winside. Prigge moves on to the consolations set for 12:30 p.m. Friday.

State Wrestling Class D first round

The opening round didn't start well for East Butler and Aquinas in the Class D State Wrestling Championships at the Qwest Center in Omaha.

East Butler sophomore Cody Florian, 24-12,  was pinned by Carter Tegler, 27-4 of Elkhorn Valley in the 119 lb. division. Florian will face sophomore Walter Flint, 20-12 of Elwood in the consolation round on Friday mornnig.

Scouts advance four to semifinals

The David City Scouts have four wrestlers in the semifinals at the Class C Nebraska State Wrestling Championships. Sem-finals and third round consolations begin at 6 p.m. Friday. at the Qwest Center in Omaha.

Jacob Schwartz won a 215 lb quarterfinal decision over Cody Stowe, 19-11, of Valentine in the quarterfinals. Schwarz received a bye in the first round. Schwartz will face Eli Vosler, 36-1, of North Bend Central.

Johnson to help city with projects

Former City Administrator Joe Johnson will be helping the city to wrap up projects that were still incomplete before Johnson left in December to a new post in his hometown of South Sioux City.

The City Council voted 5-0, with Councilman Bill Scribner absent, to allow Mayor Dana Trowbridge to negotiate an hourly wage for using Johnson's services.

Johnson had taken the projects of downtown revitalization, Northwest Drainage, and methane power generation to advanced stages before he resigned in December.

Raiden Shanahan


LINCOLN - Seth and Greta (Jones) Shanahan of Lincoln are the parents of a son, Raiden Michael, born Feb. 3, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.
He weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces.

Grandparents are Mike and Joanie Jones of David City and Bob and Deb Shanahan of Adams.

Great-grandparents are Mary Ann Morrisey of Fremont and Eugene and Linda Jones of
Benkelman.
