East Butler, Humphrey advance to semi-finals

East Butler didn't let Howells get a second win against the Tigers in the opening round of the Class D-1 State Basketball Tournament on Thursday in Lincoln. The Tigers led at halftime and defeated the Bobcats 55-44 on Thursday morning at Lincoln North Star. Howells handed East Butler one its three losses earlier in the year.

Next up is Humphrey, a 49-46 winner in overtime over No. 7 Kenesaw.
East Butler and Humphrey tip off at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Pershing.

Meeting topic: Flood insurance, flood plain maps

A meeting has been set for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 11, at the Butler County Courthouse for discussion of the National Flood Insurance Program and to discuss the Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map, (DFIRM) for Butler County and its cities and villages.

The meeting will be attended by officials from Butler County, David City, Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources and AMEC Earth and Environmental.

East Butler Coach Gerry Reinsch didn't have to go very far to start looking at film of the team's first round opponent at the Class D-1 State Tournament.

The Tigers (20-3), ranked second in Class D-1 will play fifth-ranked Howells (15-7) at 10:45 a.m.Thursday at Lincoln Northstar High School.

The two teams met Dec. 29 in the first round of the Howells Holiday Tournament. The Bobcats captured a 60-51 victory.

FSA: Farmers eligible for emergency loans

LINCOLN - Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director, Dan Steinkruger, announced today that family farmers in 34 Nebraska counties may be eligible to apply for low interest Emergency (EM) loans due to physical and production losses caused by severe winter storms and snowstorms that occurred from December 22, 2009 through January 8, 2010.
 

Shelby announces plans for Tomasevicz visit on Monday

Curtis Tomasevicz, the Shelby, Nebraska native who helped USA 1 to the gold medal in bobsledding at the Vancouver Olympic Games, will be the guest speaker at an assembly in his honor at Shelby Public School, Monday, March 8, at 9 a.m. This event is open to the public.

His appearance is being sponsored by the Shelby High School Student Council/Character Council, Shelby Booster Club, Shelby Chamber of Commerce, and Pinnacle Bank - Shelby Branch.

Harp and flute duo comes to DC March 14

Nebraska's professional harp and flute "Duo Adante will bring a special blend of music to David City for the Butler County Arts Council at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 14. This concert will include the baroque music of Leonardo Vinci, the romantic styles of Franz Lizst, medieval melodies and "song dreams" for flute and harp. It will be a great way to enjoy the afternoon at St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 620 D Street in David City.

Suggested donation at the door for adults is $8 and B.C.A.C. members are admitted free.

Brehm, Irons join Zavodny in mayoral race

The May 11 primary ballot will include a runoff for the office of mayor of David City.

Mayor Dana Trowbridge opted not to seek another term. Alan Zavodny filed for office on Feb. 16. Late last week, candidates Carol Brehm and John Irons joined in the race. The primary will cut the competition down to two for the November general election.

Two candidates each have filed for the City Council positions in the three wards. They will advance to the general election. For more election news, visit www.thebanner-press.com.

Dorothy Hull

Dorothy M. Hull, 98, of David City, formerly of Grand Island, passed away Monday, March 1, 2010, in Lincoln.

Funeral Services are Wednesday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Chermok Funeral Home in David City, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will be at the David City Cemetery.

Dorothy was born Dec. 12, 1911, at Harrison to George and Etta (Pollman) Hascall. She attended school in Garrison through the eighth grade and graduated from David City High School in 1930. She was a sales clerk in Hills Bakery in David City.

Two races develop for primary election

The filing deadline for non-incumbents passed at 5 p.m. Monday, with only two races developing on the May 11 primary election ballot, the County Clerk's office reported.

Mayor Dana Trowbridge opted not to try for a second term. As of Monday, three candidates have stepped forward: Alan Zavodny, Carol Brehm and John Irons. The primary will determine which two will advance to the November election.
