English language outreach, 10 a.m., Congregational Christian Church

Carol Newsom, native of David City who graduated from DCHS and went on to study special education at UNL will be returning to her hometown to give witness to her outreach to those who do not know the English language and wish to learn. On August 30th at 10 am she will share her faith in this outreach at the Congregational-Christian Church at 696 5th Street in David City, NE at morning worship. Pastor Jack McDonald invites all who are interested to come to this service. Carol Newsom donates her time and effort from her Lincoln, NE kitchen teaching English to people from Nepal, China, Belarus, and Siberia. Her calling to this ministry came as a result of a challenge by her pastor in Lincoln to do something for her community – to make a difference. Immediately after the service a covered dish luncheon will be provided to give time to visit with Carol and enjoy the fellowship of those present. Donations to the covered dish meal will be graciously accepted. If you have any questions or wish to RSVP, please call Jack McDonald at 402-538-3270.

David City Middle School students will conduct a door-to-door fundraising campaign on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in partnership with the Black Hills Cares Program. The energy assistance program is administered by the Salvation Army and the proceeds will be available for use by Butler County families needing financial assistance with energy costs. Black Hills Energy will match the proceeds of the campaign dollar-for-dollar. Many of the area retailers are supporting the event. The stores will have canisters and their customers can contribute by dropping their pocket change into the jars. HeatShare, a customer service outreach program of Black Hills Energy, has provided more than $600,000 of assistance to Nebraska residents since its inception in 2001. The funds are available to help lower-income families with energy costs, including natural gas, electricity, fuel oil, propane and wood. Funds may also be used for weatherization and home heating/cooling equipment repair. If residents have concerns about paying energy bills, they should first contact their utilities and make payment arrangements, if possible. If it is determined that payment assistance is essential, the next contact for Butler County residents would be the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services in Seward at 402-643-6614. See the Jan. 21 edition of The Banner-Press for more information about the fundraising effort.
