The holidays were a good time for the Shelby girls basketball team to pick up its first victories of the season.
The Huskies defeated Prague 44-31 to win the Shelby Holiday Tournament Dec. 30.
That followed a 54-43 win over Palmer Dec. 29.
Good ballhandling helped Shelby (2-5) get past the Panthers (2-4) in the championship.
The Huskies had more steals (16) than turnovers (13) in the contest. Their defense led to 31 Prague turnovers.
Maddie Scow led Shelby with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Makanna Davis scored 10 points. Joce Hopkins had six rebounds and six steals. DeAnna Cyza had four steals. Kiley Samek added three assists and three steals.
Halie Schomaker scored eight points to lead Prague.
Trailing by two points at halftime, Shelby outscored Palmer 32-19 to get the first round victory.
Hopkins led Shelby with 21 points and seven rebounds. Scow added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Samek had 13 rebounds, eight points and seven steals. Davis had three assists.
Maggie Ramold scored 11 points for Palmer (3-4), which defeated Cedar Bluffs 55-41 in the consolation game. Brianna Meyer added 10 points.
Shelby hosted Dorchester Tuesday. The Huskies travel to East Butler Friday before hosting Dodge Saturday. Nebraska Lutheran will be in Shelby next Tuesday.
